The Lorenz Butterfly, 2025

  • Created in connection with Jessica Lang’s ballet The Lorenz Butterfly for Sarasota Ballet, this painting is part of Lang’s ongoing practice of creating an original artwork for each of her ballets.

Inspired by Edward Lorenz’s groundbreaking work in chaos theory, the painting reflects the idea that small shifts can create entirely different paths, embracing the beauty of movement, transformation, and the unexpected. The two panels echo the wing-like form of the Lorenz attractor, while layers of luminous greens, yellows, blues, and soft earth tones move across the canvas in sweeping, gestural strokes.

The original artwork was transformed into the backdrop for Lang’s ballet of the same title, becoming an integral part of the visual world of the choreography.
